These Cucumbers Because of Indira Gandhi: A women to Rahul Gandhi

A few days back, as our Yatra was passing through Karnataka, I saw this elderly woman eagerly watching us while holding close to her chest two cucumbers.

I felt she had something to say and was unsure how to make her way in. So I gestured her to join us. As I enquired about her, she gave me the two cucumbers and then went on to narrate a story.

She had grown these in her field that her family had got because of the historic Land Reforms Act. In her own innocent way, she expressed her gratefulness to former PM and my grandmother, Indira Gandhi ji.

It is in such moments of love and affection from people that I am reminded of the impact visionary, people-centric policies have in empowering generations of them.

Thanks to this doting ‘Ajji’ for bringing back memories of my own grandmother. Her appreciative gesture is a testament to the lasting bonds good governance builds with people.
