Recommendations for Sanctions on RSS and RAW!

New Delhi: In a development that could impact India’s international standing, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has made several stringent recommendations against India in its 2026 Annual Report.

The commission’s suggestion to the U.S. government to impose Sanctions on the influential Indian organization RSS and the intelligence agency RAW has sparked significant global debate.

Key Highlights of the Report: Targeted Sanctions: Citing alleged violations of religious minority rights in India, the commission has recommended “targeted sanctions” against individuals and entities (including RSS and R&AW) deemed responsible.

Asset Freezing: The report urges the U.S. government to freeze the assets of these entities and deny entry to individuals associated with them.

CPC Designation: For the consecutive year, the commission has recommended designating India as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) regarding religious freedom.

India’s Sharp Reaction: “A Biased Report”

The Indian government has completely rejected the findings. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded by stating, “This report is divorced from reality and is purely politically motivated. This commission has failed to understand India’s democratic and pluralistic culture.”

Note: USCIRF is an independent commission that provides recommendations to the U.S. government; its suggestions are not legally binding official U.S. policy. However, making such serious allegations against strategic institutions has created a stir in diplomatic circles.

What’s Next?: It remains to be seen whether the U.S. government will officially adopt these recommendations or set them aside in the interest of maintaining strong bilateral ties with India.
