No country in a democracy avoids or evades discussion on its foreign policy: Anand Sharma

There is a need for a debate, discussion, and comprehensive understanding on India’s strategic engagements and its foreign policy without any further delay.

No country in a democracy avoids or evades discussion on its foreign policy. More damage is done by being non-transparent and opaque, and not communicating with your own country first in a correct manner so that we retain the strength of our voice in global affairs.

Today, a multilateral world order of governance is under siege. This is a serious issue facing the world: if a rule-based multilateral order of governance collapses, where does India position itself along with its strategic partner countries? This is a fundamental challenge before us today.

Unless and until we, along with our partner countries, have a strong voice, we will not be able to influence, let alone determine, the future course of the world we live in.

For us to be a mute witness and remain silent on what’s happening in Gaza is unacceptable. It has shocked our traditional partner countries, who looked up to India to speak. Why can’t India use its voice and influence to tell Israel to stop?
